A person is in custody after a Winnipeg fire truck was stolen, then pursued by more than a dozen police vehicles Friday afternoon.
A damaged fire truck is on Assiniboine Avenue underneath the Midtown Bridge, boxed in by police vehicles.
Police said at least 14 vehicles pursued the stolen truck, including the tactical support unit.
A person is in custody, but no charges have been laid.
Police say it’s too soon to say if anyone was hurt in the chase.
Nicole Ryan was driving down Vaughan when she saw a fire truck with a lot of damage to its front end going the wrong way.
“It had its lights on coming the wrong direction down the one way, so obviously I stopped and pulled over, put my hazards on and just waited,” she said.
“I got this feeling that something was not right.”
The fact that there were not firefighters in the back seat also was strange, she said.
Police are holding a news conference near the damaged fire truck at 2:15 p.m.
More to come.
